Nearly two thirds of New Mexicans who don’t have health insurance will be eligible for Medicaid or premium subsidies through the Affordable Care Act.

According to a study Tuesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Nearly two thirds of New Mexicans who don’t have health insurance will be eligible for Medicaid or premium subsidies through the Affordable Care Act.

Currently, 448,000 New Mexicans don’t have insurance. Of those, 219,000 will be eligible for Medicaid and 88,000 for subsidies under the state’s health insurance exchange, meaning 69 percent would be eligible for some health care assistance.

Currently about 570,000 state residents are on Medicaid and the state expects to enroll another 170,000 through Medicaid expansion through 2020, said Matt Kennicott, spokesman for the New Mexico Human Services Department.

Nationally, 25.2 million people, or 52 percent of the uninsured population, will be eligible for Medicaid or premium subsidies under the ACA, the report said.
